Have you spotted or been told you have a cavity? Cavities should be treated immediately because delaying treatment can eventually lead to tooth loss and other health complications. Good news! Cavities are easily treatable using tooth fillings

Maegan Elam, DDS and Associates in Bedford, Texas, treats cavities using composite fillings. Composites are preferred because they aptly treat tooth decay without compromising natural aesthetics. But how long do composite fillings last? Dr. Maegan Elam explains.

The lifespan of white fillings

Composite fillings are made from acrylic plastic and finely ground glass particles. These materials are moldable and easily fill up the decayed portion of the tooth to restore oral health.

Years ago, metal fillings were the go-to procedure for dental cavities and decay. Although metal fillings are long-lasting, they have safety and aesthetic concerns. Many dentists have switched to composite fillings because they are safe and look beautiful. But are they durable?

Composites may look like they aren’t strong enough, but they are incredibly resilient once they bond with the tooth. On average, composites last four to seven years, but we have seen patients with composite fillings lasting over 10 years without issues!

How to extend the lifespan of composite fillings

The longevity of white fillings depends on several factors, including location, diet, oral hygiene, and the presence of bruxism. While some of these factors are beyond your control, for others, you can do something about them.

Follow the tips below to ensure your fillings last many years.

  • Observe diligent oral hygiene — brushing twice daily and flossing at least once every day
  • Rinse your mouth with an alcohol-free, antiseptic mouthwash
  • Consider a custom-designed mouthguard if you suffer from bruxism
  • Avoid or eat hard foods in moderation
  • Avoid sugary foods and stain-causing substances
  • Adhere to bi-annual dental appointments
